Meet the Tastemakers: Secret Location's Carey Melnichuk
In our new interview series, we get to know the buyers behind our favorite retail destinations. Carey Melnichuk is the owner of Secret Location in Vancouver, Canada. Here, she tells us about fall/winter trends, Vancouver’s best brunch spot and the brand she’s wearing on repeat.
Tell us about your favorite trends for Fall/Winter ’18.
“A favorite is the prominence of western and country inspired details, whether it’s an accessory or a total look.
“Streetwear has demanded most of the attention over the last couple of years, but this fall we’re seeing greater integration of tailored items, as well as items which are more feminine and include ruffles and added volume. What will be interesting to see is how they are styled together.”
Which new brands are you loving?
“I’m currently wearing For Restless Sleepers on repeat—nothing beats the feeling of silk against the body—it’s a perfect pairing with a heel or flats. For fall, I’m looking forward to Barrie. My skin is very sensitive, and it’s the only cashmere brand I can wear. And Maggie Marilyn is truly inventive with her silhouettes, creating pieces which are progressive but also flattering.
“We also finally launched our Secret Location brand—as I was closely involved, it’s a favorite of mine.”
What sets Secret Location apart from other luxury fashion retailers?
“We have a perspective that embraces diverse styles, and supports quality craftsmanship and responsible production."
“In terms of curation, we meticulously go through each brand, as well as each product. We also have a range of collaborations, so what you find at Secret Location you won’t find anywhere else.”
How has fashion evolved since you started out in the industry?
“When Secret Location opened its doors, Instagram did not exist. The dominance of social media, influencers and circularity have shifted the industry substantially. It’s undergoing more change than ever before in history, and at a very rapid rate. However, I believe based on this shift, issues that were previously ignored are now being addressed.”
If we had just 24 hours in Vancouver, where should we go?
“Start the day at Chambar for brunch, or Kokomo in Chinatown for the perfect acai bowl. Afterwards, grab a coffee at Revolver followed by a walk through Gastown—Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood—to the Steam Clock. Follow the cobblestones down Water Street to Secret Location and stop in for a visit! Afterwards, try Miku for lunch, our proximity to the water means we have incredible seafood and sushi.
Take a stroll along the sea wall, or better still, a float plane tour. Finish the day with dinner at Cioppino’s Mediterranean grill for the best Italian food in town, and a restful sleep at the Fairmont Pacific Rim.”
If you had to pick one shoe from Chloe Gosselin's Fall/Winter collection, which would it be?
“The multicolour almond-toe Olympe mule—it’s the perfect shoe to wear all day and take you through to the evening. I love a colourblocked heel, they are incredibly easy to travel with and wear multiple times.”
